Qualitative study in France

41 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted in 2025 among adult women who had experienced a miscarriage within the previous five years in France.

The data topics included:

  • the socio-demographic characteristics of the individual and their living environment;
  • the number and outcome of previous pregnancies (to situate miscarriages within broader reproductive experiences), as well as the context of the pregnancy (or pregnancies) that ended in miscarriage (e.g. pregnancy intentions, gestational age, and information to determine the type of pregnancy loss experienced);
  • emotions and feelings related to the miscarriage;
  • experiences within the healthcare system and the care received due to the miscarriage;
  • support received during and after the miscarriage;
  • mental well-being after the miscarriage;
  • the definition of miscarriage as understood by the respondent.

Part of the data collected relates to understanding questions commonly used in quantitative surveys about miscarriages.
